GMRS Explained: The $35 Radio License for Families, Hunting Camps and Emergencies

If Meshtastic is off-grid texting, GMRS is off-grid talking. The General Mobile Radio Service is a set of FCC radio channels for short-range voice communication, and it is one of the cheapest ways to keep a family or group in touch when phones do not work.

The license

  • Cost: $35, paid to the FCC
  • Term: 10 years
  • Test: none
  • Who it covers: the licensee and their immediate family members, who can operate under the same call sign

You apply online through the FCC’s licensing system, and the license is usually issued quickly. You must be at least 18 to hold one.

Why GMRS instead of cheap walkie-talkies

Basic walkie-talkies use FRS, which shares channels with GMRS but is limited to low power and fixed antennas. A GMRS license lets you use more power, mobile radios in a vehicle, better antennas, and repeaters, which can extend range dramatically.

  • Handheld to handheld: roughly one to a few miles, depending on terrain
  • Vehicle radio with a roof antenna: several miles or more
  • Through a repeater: often 20 miles or more, depending on where the repeater sits

Rules worth knowing

  • Identify with your call sign, at least every 15 minutes during a conversation and at the end.
  • GMRS is not private. Anyone with a radio on your channel can hear you, and encryption is not allowed.
  • No business use; it is for personal and family communication.
  • Some repeaters are owned by individuals or clubs. Ask permission before using one.

Where it fits

For a hunting camp, a convoy, a range day or a household plan for outages, GMRS gives you instant voice contact that does not depend on a tower. Pair it with Meshtastic for text and location, and you have a simple, inexpensive backup communication plan.

Remember the privacy trade-off: do not discuss where you store firearms, when your house is empty, or anything else you would not say on a public channel.
